ANZIC Prize for Best Student Publication

This award aims to foster community, celebrate excellence, and recognise outstanding contributions to scientific drilling research within the ANZIC community. By highlighting exceptional work, we aim to support early-career researchers in continuing their engagement with ANZIC and advancing their careers in scientific drilling

The recipient of the ANZIC Prize for Best Student Publication will receive:

  • A plaque recognising their achievement.
  • An all-expenses-paid trip* to attend and present at the ANZIC Forum in Auckland, New Zealand 11& 12th of June, 2025.

*funding includes flights, ground transport, accommodation, meals and non-alcohol beverages 

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • The applicant must be the first author.
  • The research must have been conducted as part of their undergraduate or postgraduate research project and involve analysis of scientific drilling material or data (only ICDP, IODP, ODP,  DSDP).
  • The publication must have been published within the previous two years from the call for applications.
  • The applicant must have been a postgraduate student within the last 12 months of this call.
  • Accepted publications include first authored peer-reviewed papers, reports and book chapters.
  • The applicant does not need to be from an ANZIC member institute but must have conducted the research while enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand University and still work/reside within Australia or New Zealand.
  • Each applicant may only nominate a paper once, and one publication per round.

Application Process

The award is self-nominated, and applicants must complete the application form, which includes three key assessment questions:

  1. Impact to the Scientific Drilling Community: A half-page summary explaining the relevance of their work to the priorities of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), or ANZIC (Future DEEP Report). Applicants should articulate how their publication advances the mission of these organisations (link your work to the science priorities).
  2. Publication Details: Information about where your work was published – including its impact factor if relevant.
  3. Public Interest & Communication: A statement outlining whether and how the publication was communicated to the broader public, including any media coverage, outreach efforts, or other forms of public engagement.
